Flowers for Winter Pressing

Updated: 7 days ago

Don't put away your flower presses for the winter just because the ground is frozen and covered with snow!

Pressing vibrant, fresh flowers all year long fills me with motivation and excitement to create new work! But where can you find flowers in the heart of winter? You don’t have to search far at all!

Supermarkets Most supermarket flowers sell cut flowers and/or potted plants. Just be sure to get them when they first arrive at the store. The fresher the flowers the better they will press and keep their color.

Here are some of my favorite supermarket flowers: Alstromeria Stock Mums Daisies

Gebera Daisies Primrose

Primrose from the supermarket These beautiful potted primrose are from my local supermarket. With bright light and cool temperatures, they are prolific bloomers. If they make it to spring. they'll get planted outside in the garden.

Pressed Primrose

Here are some of those primroses after they were pressed in a Microfleur. The colors do change a bit but are nonetheless beautiful and striking. Always remember to press some leaves and stems as well!

Florists have an array of fresh, colorful flowers available for sale. Buy them by the stem or in bouquets. Most florists will carry delphinium, stock, gerbera daisies and a variety of other flowers suitable for pressing. Some, like my very favorite anemone, may have to be ordered.

Don’t forget about house plants. Snip off a few flowers and/or leaves from your houseplants and press those, too. African violets, geraniums, and clivia are among the many flowering houseplants.

One of my absolute favorite indoor plants is this stunning maidenhair fern! It presses so beautifully and adds a delightful touch to any pressed flower composition. Plus, it's simply gorgeous on its own, just like in the card above!

So just, look around and you'll find flowers to press
