Recently, I was asked to design and make 60 pressed flower bookmarks to be given as keepsakes for a memorial service for a 96 year old woman. Her daughter, who ordered the bookmarks and selected the quote and flower, explained that orange was her mother's favorite color and that books were a very, very important part of her mother's life. I was profoundly struck by the attention and thoughtfulness given by the daughter as she talked about her mother and selected a personalized momento that would bear the stamp of her beloved mother.
As I began working on these bookmarks I found myself thinking about this deceased mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and began feeling a connection to her. I imagined that if I had met her I would have liked her a lot; maybe we would have spent time talking about books or flowers or children.
It was a joy and honor to work on this project and I hope that all the recipients of this bookmark, will use the bookmark and be reminded of one special person who is no longer with them.
