Recently, a customer requested a custom order with the selected flowers to be placed on linen fabric. . Pressed flowers on fabric is by no means a novel idea, but it was a first for me and it called for some problem solving. How to stretch the fabric? What adherent to use? Will the weave of the fabric be imprinted on the flowers?
With a little bit of research and some trial and error, these questions were soon answered. The fabric selected was a loose weave, off white linen. To make the fabric tight and stiff my wonderful framer, Carolyn, dry mounted the fabric to foam board. An acid-free fabric glue was used to adhere the flowers to the fabric. The selected flowers were not so thin and delicate so imprinting was not an issue.
The acccompanying image are 3 of the custom pieces featuring Jack-in-the-pulpit, monarda, and fiddleheads. The originals are framed with conservation (UV protection) glass and a plain wood frame.
Trying something new opens new doors and keeps us moving forward. Hmmm.....maybe silk or velvet will be next!
